Who:

Phil graduated from a Big Ten school in 2023. Despite completing several internships, he struggled to secure a full-time position after graduation. Determined to strengthen his skills and marketability, he pursued an MBA and graduated in May 2025. His goal was to join a financial advisory firm as an analyst. However, even with his advanced degree and relevant experience, Phil found himself stuck—getting interviews but not offers. His confidence began to fade, and he realized he needed to understand where he was falling short.

Challenge:

Phil had the experience and qualifications that employers wanted, but confidence was holding him back—especially in networking and interviewing. He also lacked a structured daily plan to guide his job search. His “apply-only” strategy wasn’t producing results, and he needed a new approach that combined preparation, structure, and relationship-building.

Next Steps:

When Phil and I began working together in July 2025, our focus was rebuilding confidence, sharpening interview skills, and creating structure and momentum. Together, we implemented a strategic plan that included:

  • Taking a part-time analyst position to stay active, earn income, and refresh his skills.
  • Building a daily calendar to time-block his career activities for accountability and focus.
  • Crafting compelling interview stories that highlighted his strengths
and taught him how to sell himself confidently.
  • Developing a step-by-step networking plan to reconnect with colleagues, friends, and family.
  • Role-playing networking conversations until he felt natural and comfortable.
  • Leveraging his family’s network to uncover new job opportunities.
  • Conducting mock interviews to master both traditional and behavioral-based questions.
  • Creating a reusable interview preparation template for future
    opportunities.
  • Debriefing after each interview to refine his strategy and build continued confidence.

Outcome:

In less than two months, Phil landed a position as a Strategic Operations Analyst for a large advisory firm on the East Coast. Through focus, structure, and persistence, he learned how to confidently sell himself across five rounds of interviews. Each step—preparation, practice, and follow-through—helped Phil turn his confidence into a competitive edge and secure the opportunity he had been striving for.
