Who:
Scott had been out of work since January 2024 after being laid off from his technology sales position. The unexpected job loss took a toll on his mental health, and his main goal became clear — to get back into the workforce and regain confidence, structure, and fulfillment in his life.
Challenge:
While Scott had the experience and skills employers were looking for, he struggled with confidence when it came to networking and interviewing. It had been several years since he last searched for a job, and he needed to update his interview stories, articulate what he had been doing since his layoff, and present himself with renewed energy and optimism.
Next Steps:
When Scott and I began working together in July 2025, our focus was on rebuilding his confidence, sharpening his interview skills, and creating momentum in his job search. Together, we took the following steps:
- Scott took a part-time retail job to earn income, stay active, and refresh his customer service skills.
- He built a daily calendar and time-blocked his career activities to maintain structure and accountability.
- We crafted compelling interview stories that showcased his strengths and how he spent his time during the 18-month gap.
- Developed a step-by-step networking plan, reaching out to former colleagues, friends, and family.
- Role-played networking conversations until he felt confident and natural.
- Leveraged his network to uncover and pursue new sales opportunities.
- Prepared for interviews through mock sessions, focusing on both common and behavioral-based questions.
- Created an interview preparation template that he can now use for all future opportunities.
- Worked together through each stage of the interview process to refine his approach and build confidence.
Outcome:
In less than two months, Scott landed a new business development position back in the technology sector. Through focus, structure, and persistence, he reinvented himself and regained the confidence to effectively sell his skills and experience — not just to employers, but to himself.
