Who: Greg graduated from University of Wisconsin with a computer science degree in December.
Challenge: Greg was concerned about job opportunities in his field of interest. Last summer his technology internship was cancelled last-minute and he ended up working a few part-time retail jobs instead. With graduation looming, he wanted to be prepared and get a good start on his job search.
Next Steps: We coached Greg on the following:
- We helped Greg develop a virtual career fair strategy which included pre-planning, role-playing and follow-up conversations.
- We worked with Greg to update his resume to better reflect his work experience, highlighting his skills and strengths.
- We showed Greg how to best utilize LinkedIn to connect with alumni, and how to find jobs that would be a great fit for his strengths.
- We helped Greg build a networking database which included Badger alumni, and then role-played conversations he might have with alumni seeking their advice with his career search.
Then we worked together to develop a networking strategy which included the following:
- Which companies to target and how to research them
- How to network into his companies of interest
- Role Playing networking conversations
- Practiced interview questions and responses to help Greg differentiate himself from other candidates.
Outcome: By networking, Greg was able to set up multiple interviews for a variety of different positions in his desired field. Greg received several job offers and accepted a position as a Technical Analyst at a digital consulting firm.
