- Not researching the company – if you don’t know what the company does, and who its competitors are, you are not going to make it to the second interview. Make sure to do your homework, and research the company, the industry, and your interviewer.
- Speaking too much – even qualified candidates sometimes do not speak confidently or clearly. Take a moment and gather your thoughts. It is ok to have a pause in the conversation.
- Arrogance – having confidence is important, showing too much confidence can turn into arrogance and come across as rudeness. Be self-aware and make sure to give examples with “I” and “we”. Taking credit for everything is also a sign of arrogance.
- Showing up (virtually or in-person) too early or late – we all know being late is a huge strike against you, but also make sure you are not too early. Even if you arrive 15 minutes early, wait and just check-in 5 minutes before. Recruiters are busy and could also be preparing to meet with you.
- Badmouthing your past company or manager – this is a big turnoff. Employers could wonder why you left your past company if you are so negative in your responses. Take the high road and explain why you are interested in the opportunity in which you are interviewing.
Getting to the interview is an accomplishment itself. Don’t make any mistakes and bring your best self to the table.
