You want to stay ahead of the curve and increase your chances of getting a job offer at the end of your internship. Here are some tips:
- Be friendly – whether virtual or in the office, always smile, and say hi to everyone.
- Ask questions – people like people who are genuinely interested in others. It’s easy to make small talk at the watercooler, or when your call starts. Talk about the weather, your weekend, ask how long they’ve been at the company, anything to start a conversation.
- Join the conversation – if there are social opportunities, like happy hours, breakfasts a softball team, show up and be interested.
- Network with co-interns – don’t just think networking with your manager is important. Your fellow interns are a great network to tap into.
While you might feel uncomfortable networking with people you don’t know, the more you exercise this muscle, the better you will get at it. Networking doesn’t end when you get the job, it is a lifelong skill you should continue to perfect.
