Millennial Managers Share the Secrets of Their Promotional Success

How do millennials acquire success today? Read this blog to find out. Millennials (ages 25-38) currently make up the majority of the workforce. And according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, they will comprise 75% of the U.S. workforce by 2030. Crazy, right? The age of the Boomer is officially a thing of the past like dinosaurs and mullets (okay, some people are trying to bring mullets back, but the operative question is … Why?).

Anyway…Not only is the millennial wave waxing big-time, but the generation is also already ascending the corporate ladder vis-a-vis promotions aplenty. Many younger people are, in fact, already in management positions. According to an extensive survey conducted by Acumina, a leading employee experience platform, job-hopping is standard practice amongst the millennial generation. The survey included more than 1000 participants and found that 75% of millennials credited frequent employment changes as beneficial to their ascension into managerial positions. 40% of respondents already had four or more jobs since high school or college graduation. The practice of company hop-scotching has long been frowned upon by the employment establishment, which has historically lauded the benefits of staying in a position for a minimum of two to three years for the sake of experience and consistency.

Millennials are having none of this. They are rewriting the rules of employment, expectations, work environment, benefits, and promotions. They have also added the term “work/balance” to the capitalist lexicon.

People in this age bracket have often been referred to, pejoratively, as the “entitled” generation, accused of being rescued by “helicopter” parents and having expectations that eschew traditional dues-paying. Whatever the case may be, this generation knows what it wants and is not timid when it comes to challenging the status quo of workplace culture.

A few interesting stats to consider:

  • Just 12% adhere to the average 40-hour workweek
  • A third (31%) work “as many hours as it takes to get the job done”
  • 41% work between 40-50 hours a week, with 16% focusing more on tasks to get done instead of hours worked.
  • 70% of respondents stated they craved critical feedback and mentorship
  • 92% said that it was  “important/very important” that their accomplishments were recognized by not only their colleagues but the more senior members of the staff.
  • Millennials prefer remote work. 66% responded that they prefer working from home.

No matter what generation you belong to, with three-quarters of the workforce being led by millennials in the next decade, we can all learn much about promotions and self-advocating in the workplace. Self-advocacy. Hard work. Fresh thinking. Changing jobs frequently. Millennials are rewriting the rules of employment and promotion and everyone can benefit from how this young generation is creating a paradigm shift in the workplace.
